Recap
(This week’s game recap from Coach Rock)
Thanks to all that braved the cold to cheer on the boys last night. For the newer parents and players please note that Westlake is a storied program in Texas rugby. They have numerous State championship titles and have a solid program, year after year. They always come prepared for battle and are coached well. Last night they proved again to continue to walk that path and gave our boys a run.
The first half we started strong. Then with a miscue Westlake capitalized and scored first. It didn’t help that we had missed tackles. Once they captured the momentum it was difficult for our young team to rebound. Similar to last week the first half was riddled with errors, poor decisions and penalties that kept us out of opportunities. With a 15-point deficit in the first half we had our work cut out for us.
The second half started poorly with a dropped kick off. We really couldn’t let them score if we had any chance for victory. But again, we shot ourselves in the foot and had penalty after penalty and missed assignments that led to a score putting us in the hole by 20 points. The boys did fight back to score twice but simply came up short, 20-10. It wasn’t our best game and as we are early in the season, we still have time to improve, which we will. For the second week in a row the players never gave up and never gave in, fighting til the end. That is the team I prefer; we just have to cut down on mistakes and penalties to give us a chance to win.
Players of the match were Kadin Dyess in the backs and Ryan Hallenberger in the forwards who played his best game to date. Coaches and teammates were very proud of his performance.
Thanks to all the parents that helped out last night with everything. It takes all of us to make this happen.
1-1 for now and another big match next week against Jesuit – Dallas.
Tries: Ryan Hallenberger (2)
