Rock Hold On for the Win

Rock High School boys kicked off their season with a 37-24 win over the Austin Huns at Dr Todd Knight field today.

Despite a season ending injury to fullback Brayden Harshaw, tries from captain Gavin Richards (the first Rock try on the new field), Ryan Hallenberger, Lawson Weston, Mathew Bruce and Jacob Reyes saw them home against a tough and spirited Huns team. Lawson Weston was named Man of the Match, and was a constant menace with his hard running and soft hands, scoring a great try with a burst of pace and an outrageous dummy.

Prior to his injury, Bradyen Harshaw kicked a conversion, Mathew Bruce kicking two further conversions and two penalty goals to go alongside his try.

Rock led 17-5 at half time, and at one point were 29-5 up before a determined comeback by the Huns got them within striking distance at 29-24 with Rock a man down to the sin bin. A long pass from playmaker Richards gave Jacob Reyes the outside line on his man and he broke two tackles to sprint away for the try and provide some daylight, before Rock completed the scoring with a penalty goal to run out the clock and finish up 37-24.

Several players had their first experience of “shooting the boot”.
