Rock Rugby Rolls into AG Combine

Rock Rugby turned out at the Wright Whitaker Sports Complex today to take part in the Austin Gilgronis Combine. Enduring the grueling hot day and soaking up all this tremendous Rugby knowledge were Rock’s own Mason Gracian, Marcos Gonzalez, Ryan Hallenberger, Nico Regalado, and Gavin Richards.

National Teams, Major League Rugby, and Colleges use Combines to scout for players. Prospective players display their talent, skills, and training for the great sport of Rugby.

Sure, you can run a 40-meter dash in five flat, but how about a Bronco?

The Bronco test is a measurement of aerobic endurance. The Bronco involves running shuttles to-and-from a start line to the 20, 40, and 60-meter mark five times against the clock. The Bronco covers a total distance of 1200 meters.

As Coach Sam Harris noted, “the Bronco is a universal test” used in the Rugby world to gauge players aerobic endurance.

With very vocal support from AG coaches, players and other participants, Rock Rugby’s Gavin Richards led the high school boys home with a time of 5:04.

The players were also put through their paces in many other areas by AG’s coaches and Major League Rugby players with a series of recorded tests designed to measure a player’s agility, endurance, and rugby-specific skills.

At this Saturday’s combine, there were around 60 players, from high school to adults, both from Austin and further afield.

Our Rock boys performed well, held their own, and gained valuable experience from their interaction with world-class Rugby Coaches and Players.

The AG adult academy team will play a series of matches throughout the Fall and Winter. The Outlaws, the AG’s U18 Academy, plan to take the field after Rock Rugby’s league season has finished.

The Austin Gilgronis, Austin’s Major League Rugby team, is actively looking to invest and develop local talent and clubs. They’re also promoting the great sport of Rugby in Central Texas.

Selected players for the AG’s Select team, The Outlaws, will access world-class coaching at practice and the use of the AG’s workout facilities.
